JORGE FUENTEALBA ARCOS

Jorge Fuentealba Arcos, Ph.D., is a pharmaceutical chemist from the University of Chile, with a master's degree in Clinical Studies and a doctorate in Pharmacology from the Autonomous University of Madrid, Spain. Since 2005, he has been part of the Department of Physiology at the University of Concepción, where he currently serves as a full professor.

Between 2023 and 2025, he was elected Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences at the UdeC, leading processes of academic innovation, institutional strengthening, and community outreach. He has also held leadership roles in the Chilean Society of Pharmacology, as director for Concepción (2014–2015; 2025–2026), vice-president (2016–2017) and president (2018–2019).

His lines of research focus on neuropharmacology and molecular mechanisms of the central nervous system, with a focus on glycine and GABA-A receptors and their application in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. Currently, together with the UdeC's Faculties of Forestry Sciences and Medicine, he is developing an interdisciplinary project on nature-based therapies.
